Geoff Thomas revient relever le défi du Tour de France pour la septième fois
En juin 2025, l'ancien international anglais et joueur de Crystal Palace Geoff Thomas parcourra le Tour de France, 20 ans après avoir terminé pour la première fois les 21 étapes emblématiques. Il collectera des fonds essentiels pour Cure Leukaemia, une cause qui lui tient à cœur après avoir lui-même vaincu une leucémie myéloïde chronique il y a vingt ans.
Le parcours de Thomas vers la ligne de départ a été marqué par des revers dus aux blessures et des douleurs invalidantes au genou, mais grâce à l'injection innovante d'hydrogel Arthrosamid®, sa douleur liée à l'arthrose du genou est sous contrôle et il a repris l'entraînement, prêt à conquérir l'un des parcours les plus emblématiques du cyclisme.
En 2003, un an seulement après avoir pris sa retraite du football professionnel, Thomas a reçu un diagnostic de leucémie myéloïde chronique (une forme de cancer du sang) et les médecins ne lui donnaient que trois mois à vivre. Cependant, après avoir reçu une greffe de cellules souches de sa sœur Kay et suivi un traitement du Professeur Charlie Craddock CBE, co-fondateur de Cure Leukaemia, Geoff est entré en rémission en janvier 2005. Ce traitement qui lui a sauvé la vie l'a motivé à redonner, en se consacrant à la sensibilisation et à la collecte de fonds pour les patients atteints de cancer du sang à travers le monde.
S'exprimant sur sa décision de revenir sur le Tour, Geoff a déclaré : "Je dois revenir pour un dernier Tour pour célébrer les 20 ans depuis ma première participation au Tour de France. C'est un événement incroyablement spécial pour moi, non seulement en raison du défi qu'il représente, mais aussi à cause de la cause qu'il soutient. Chaque année où nous roulons, nous faisons une réelle différence, et je suis fier d'en faire à nouveau partie en 2025 dans un peu moins de 12 semaines !"
Ce n'était pas facile de faire mon retour sur le Tour, mais recevoir l'injection d'Arthrosamid® a soulagé la douleur au genou que je ressentais et m'a permis de m'entraîner à mon plein potentiel. Sans le soutien de l'équipe et de Mark Gillett, je n'aurais pas eu la chance de participer à nouveau, donc je suis extrêmement reconnaissant de pouvoir revenir et pédaler sur ce parcours emblématique.
