Jon Pile, 44, is an avid athlete, spending most of his weekends doing some form of exercise whether that’s running, cycling or swimming. But last August things all changed for Jon. A fall whilst running kicked off symptoms and significant knee pain. In a matter of months, he went from competing in triathlons to not being able to do a simple quad stretch or even play football in the garden with his kids, everything from sport to basic household tasks became increasingly difficult.
Jon tried a variety of pain relief options including hyaluronic acid injections, of which didn’t have massive long-term benefits. He’d exhausted all sensible drug treatments and faced the stark possibility of knee surgery. That was until he met Dr. George Bownes who he was referred to after his injury. After assessments Dr. Bownes suggested Arthrosamid® and Jon opted for this non-invasive, injectable hydrogel implant, providing long-lasting pain relief and helping Jon get back to doing the activities he loves.
Describing the procedure itself, Jon said:
“It’s incomparable to an invasive procedure or surgery. It was an easy procedure, taking just 15 minutes and since then I’ve been able to build back fairly quickly, and I have peace of mind that it’s not going to wear off.”
Six-months post-injection, Jon is back to doing what he loves most. Just two days after receiving the treatment Jon was back in the pool, two weeks later he was on the bike, then back to running and skiing. Now Jon is able to move his body freely and get back to exercising pain-free. He has been able to build back his strength and complete months of intensive training to compete in a 50k ultra-marathon.
For Jon this treatment has truly been life-changing, he said: “for me exercise is intrinsic for my mental wellbeing and general health, so getting back into running, crossfit, taking the kids skiing, racing in triathlons, is amazing. I’d absolutely recommend Arthrosamid® to anyone, and I wish both the NHS and medical insurance providers would recognise the benefits so it’s accessible to so many more people.”
“I would just say if people were unable to do what they love then don’t delay and just get on with it. There’s evidence backing it up that it is a positive treatment, it’s not just me, there are other sports professionals turning to it. I’ve never run an ultra before so that fact that four-five months after being treated with Arthrosamid® I am confident to push myself into the realm of doing something I’ve never done before, and push my body that much, just shows to confidence in the injection.”
