Spire Healthcare Abergele Clinic opened its doors to prospective patients during an interactive and informative evening to improve ‘knee knowledge ‘
People across North Wales were recently invited to spend an evening learning about the range of treatment options available for the effective management of the pain and immobility associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA).
Pledging to put patients at the heart of the decision-making process, the Open Evening (organised on behalf of the orthopaedic team at Spire Healthcare Abergele Clinic invited locals to listen to leading clinical experts as they shared their knowledge and insight about the treatment pathways that are now routinely on offer. The information evening set out to encourage and empower people to consider their choices, including innovative, minimally invasive interventions such as hydrogel injections which for many, are still an unknown and unexplored option.
A ’full house’ on September 8th saw a captive audience of over 30 guests immersed in an evening of ‘live’, clinical demonstrations, expert-led presentations, patient testimonials and a unique opportunity for a Q&A session with local leaders in the field.
Chaired by Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Muthu Ganapathi and Clinical Services Manager at Spire Healthcare Abergele Clinic, Jess Booker, the event took prospective patients (as well as family members on a ‘fact-finding’ mission for loved ones seeking support for knee OA) through the many options available, helping them to navigate the ‘sometimes overwhelming’ treatment pathways and understanding which route might be right for them.
Mr Ganapathi said; “It was a highly rewarding evening with a strong turnout. I was pleasantly surprised by how engaged the audience remained throughout—asking thoughtful questions right up until the end of a nearly two-hour session. We explored a wide range of treatment options for knee pain, from lifestyle measures such as weight reduction to surgical interventions, including a live demonstration of robotic-assisted knee replacement.
“The discussion also covered Arthrosamid injection, a newly available non-operative option that may benefit selected patients with knee arthritis.”
As part of the presentation around the potential benefits the Arthrosamid injection, a patient who’d recently been treated at Spire Healthcare’s Abergele Clinic ‘dialled in’ to provide a live testimonial in a real time conversation with clinician Jess Booker. The informal (but highly informative chat) was ‘broadcast’ across the room via speaker ‘phone to a captivated audience who listened keenly to the patient’s positive experience of the injection and the significant reduction in pain he was already enjoying.
The patient who’d so kindly offered to share his story explained he was based in Liverpool but had travelled to North Wales when he’d heard about Arthrosamid and that Mr Ganapathi was now delivering the treatment at Spire Abergele. Speaking enthusiastically about the treatment process and the subsequent results, the patient simply described it as “really amazing” and “feeling better and more mobile than I’ve felt in the past 6 years!”
Clinical Services Manager, Jess Booker adds; “It was a real privilege to have been involved with this event and to see how well received the Open Evening was amongst the local community – and beyond.
“It really underlined how patients today are taking ownership of their health and wellbeing, with an active interest in the range of treatment options - particularly non-surgical – now available.
“It was wonderful to have an opportunity to share information and provide patients with further knowledge – in the form of expert talks and ‘reading material’ to take away and digest at their leisure - about the growing availability of the Arthrosamid® hydrogel injection. Mr Ganapathi delivered fascinating presentations and I’m sure everyone who attended left with a greater understanding about causes of knee pain and the treatment options available – whether surgical or minimally invasive. As a local healthcare professional, I felt the team at Spire Healthcare, Abergele ‘pulled off’ a really inclusive and informative event – with patients very much at its core.”
